IMN + Super Giant Robot Brothers

As part of Epic Games’ Virtual Production Week, Reel FX gave a behind the scenes look at how they are using the Unreal Video Game Engine to animate their Netflix series, Super Giant Robot Brothers! Unreal Engine has been used in television and film before, notably for visual effects in Lucasfilm’s The Mandalorian, but Reel FX is using the game engine to create characters, environments, and assets ahead of time to streamline the animation process.

IMN's Lead Colorist, Eric DeHaven said, "With Super Giant Robot Brothers we have the opportunity to explore a completely unique workflow for animated content. Rendering in realtime using Unreal engine and in ACES color space allows for greater creativity on the animation and lighting side. And where most animated content is created in REC709, the use of ACES allows for us to deliver natively in HDR with greater dynamic range and a richer color palette. By setting up review stations using HDR screens, this allows the lighters to take better advantage of what HDR can achieve visually. This makes the delivery process in DI much smoother and allows us to focus on crafting the look the creators intended while maintaining a true image down to SDR with Dolby Vision."
